Thank you, Media for all your fearmongering. You created a continent wide panic for no good reason. People are waiting in line 24 hours a day to get a vaccine and being turned away because they are not one of the group most vulnerable: pregnant women, asthmatics, children under 5.
I am an asthmatic and I didn't wait in line for the vaccine. Why? We already had it. This is why I was so quiet on my journal this past month. It hit us. First in my head, sinuses and lungs, then it swooped around a second time and hit me in the intestines. It hit Ron hard in the lungs, but he is recovering and has not had to miss a day of work. And Alex blew it off in 2 days.
Why am I not panicking? Aside from missing a half of a shift, it was NOT THAT BAD!!! I mostly rested in the easy chair, eating light foods, lots of apples, oranges, blueberries (I recommend frozen blueberries—they are superfoods with lots of antioxidant and stuffed to the hilt with Vitamin C.)
See it's our present trend of over panicking and running to the doctor and overdoing it with the Tamiflu (do not take that unless you have the flu. Do not take it as a preemptive.) and disinfectants antibiotics that is going to produce a super virus. A drug resistant virus.
WE must let our natural immune systems handle this one. 1300 hundred people in the U.S. have died but this is out of 300,000,000 million people. A normal flu bug carries off 20,000 people annually.
Now the media, realizing the monster they have created by causing a stampede to the clinics, are trying to get people to settle down and emphasize only the most vulnerable can be taken care of. In Canada, they are turning away more people than they are treating. In the U.S. with the shrill CNN, I can't imagine.
What is it like there? Are the lines a disaster pit? Is it true some people are getting into fist fights there?
You know I haven't understood why everyone has been so panicky. And didn't Obama make it a national something? That didn't help. I'm a pregnant asthmatic. I haven't gotten the shot yet. IF my doctors office ever gets it in, I will make an appointment to go get one. I am NOT waiting outside in the rain and cold for hours to get it. IF I DO get it.... it's the flu. You stay hydrated, eat light and sleep.
I'm sorry you all got it, but glad you made it through without problems ;)
I'm so weary of fighting the fear mongers, it takes conscious effort to do so. How on earth will we know when something is urgent? The poor kids growing up in these times. I've read about studies showing that kids today are rarely unsupervised, they worry about bad things 'out there', etc.
Glad you and yours are feeling better. I'm a big fan of frozen blueberries (and all the berries too) They're great for smoothies and in oatmeal.
People are forgetting that H1N1 is the flu. Yes, it's icky and miserable, but it still just the flu. I am a nurse and just had the nasal spray vaccine on Friday. Luckily no side effects whatsoever. Woot!
I hope there is something other than blueberries as I have developed a food allergy to them just this past year. I am glad you guys are alright. Seriously. I have COPD and still can't get vaccinated. I am hoping folks here in LJ that do have it, please put down how bad it may or may not be so I know what I can expect if I get it. One of my work mates was just diagnosed with it on this past Friday.
Check the numbers until NOW with previous years. At the rate this is going, it will surpass deaths of previous years, by quite a lot. It's spreading more, and causing more severe illness.
I'm glad you didn't have a hard time, but that doesn't make any of the real statistics any less true. The media is a bit heavy handed, but no reason to go the opposite way and encourage irresonsibility, and treat those who are concerned for real reasons as being unrealistic.
disinfectants antibiotics that is going to produce a super virus. A drug resistant virus.
If you're trying to make a point about medical hype, it would help if you had your facts correct. Antibiotics act on bacteria only, NOT viruses, so there's no way that antibiotics can create a drug resistant virus. Antibiotics can however create drug resistant bacteria, such as MRSA.
My oldest dd works for her county health dept and she got a regular flu shot but not the H1N1 because she's not high risk. She does administer clinics though and she says they're packed and people are mad because they're getting the nose spray instead of shots. I want to get a regular flu shot but I'm at the bottom of the heap for getting the H1N1 and won't get it anyway because ...... I'm old and have been exposed to similar before. the big panic with H1N1 isn't because it's so dangerous, but many of the deaths are in people that should be able to fight it off and can't as opposed to other influenzas that take out old farts like me.
I notice more that people are afraid to get the vaccine. It was offered to all school children in New York--only 30% got it, because the other 70%'s parents refused to give permission. Everyone's afraid the vaccine will be worse than the flu itself.
I don't know where this vaccine fear, in general, comes from here in the US, except from the problem YEARS ago when they used Thimerosal as an ingredient in some vaccines.
*hugs* We are content to see if we even get it. I have survived worse... and we got hit with something nasty but didn't go to the Doctor... except when I couldn't breathe and needed a stronger cough expectorant/suppressor to enable me to sleep/breathe. Then by the third round of the crud we were well versed and it only flitted around a bit before taking off.
You are my hero ;) The whole house sick with it at once could not have been fun.
Just got the letter from my doctor's today: they're very keen that young asthmatics go in ASAP to get vaccinated because we weren't around for the last outbreak (which the over-65s were). The whole swine flu thing has practically gone away here, apart from the occasional thing of 'new beds at X hospital for breathing disorders' and the like.
Oh I am glad you lot threw it off relatively fast! Was it confirmed to be H1N1? I'm hearing that that comes on faster than the regular flu, and that's part of the problem--people are in trouble before they or their families quite realize they're sick.
And the thing I see here is they aren't testing people, because they don't want panic, so the stats are ridiculously understated and it's very hard to know what percentage of flu that is reportsed is H1N1.
There's been a hiccup in manufacturing the H1N1 vaccine and they're doing everything they can to minimize demand. But frankly I changed my mind and stopped asking about it. For one thing, someone I trust says it's not an effective vaccine, it doesn't actually have virus in it, and what it does have may do harm. For another, I caught some kind of flu myself despite having had the seasonal flu shot, and was so sick I actually called in from work, so frankly I think I just had it.
